- I'm using inexpensive materials to make a modern DIY gutter than will accent my new, minimalist deck roof and solve my drainage problems. There are much easier ways to install a gutter, but that's not really how I do things. I'm going for something unique. And as usual, I'm doing it super cheap.
You don't have to tell me I'm crazy for using a garden hose as a downspout either. I well aware of that too. Fortunately the roof is not so large that it overflows the gutter. Living in Pennsylvania, we get rain for days at a time, but almost never as severe as in the south. So the garden hose can usually take it.
You can find 8 inch or 10 inch aluminum flashing and dowel rods like the ones I'm using at any building supply store.

You can buy good looking aluminum gutters with no paint on them (paint them yourself, or not). For a small section like that, it would have cost around $50 to $70.
For real. This video confuses me. So much time and money spent on something so cheap. Just buy black gutter and rain chain it. Done for 30 bucks and 30 minutes of work. I kept watching though because in the back of your mind you are thinking there is a chance he is going to show a good shot of that wife’s ass, but no. Very selfish.

Something to keep the hose attachment from clogging with leaves may be a good idea.
I was going to suggest using a mesh gutter cover. I bought mine at Costco for all my gutters. It works great! Yeah I had to clean the gutters first, but now they flow really well.

Brilliant Concept. I have done a similar thing with a 90mm PVC stormwater pipe cut lengthways, (2 cuts 60mm apart) opened up and staked to the facia board with long Gal screws at 900mm centers, and finished with cap ends. Paint to suit. And yes, yours does look sexy. Cheers from Michael. Australia.
Nobody needs the measurements or instructions. We don’t know what communist millimeters are anyways. We use freedom feet and fractions. A system so confusing even we are dumbfounded by it. Or maybe we are just dumb? 😜

I looked into conventional gutters of course, but once I came up with this idea I had to try it. It took more effort than I'd hoped, but by that point there was no turning back.

Oh man we need this rt now at our rental! No gutters or cover in the backyard, everything pours on our head. We’re currently using a pop up tent cover. I hate that “camping” feeling when we’re outside.😂 it’s just ugly!

Blake, I was going to suggest using clear Flex Seal on the underside of the roof to the top of the gutter on the facia board. It's only a couple of inches, so it shouldn't detract from the sexinest of your work.
Excellent! Loved the creativity-Good job man! That being said, might I suggest usign carriage bolts to attach it to the pergola for a cleaner look? Again, good job!
I used 2-1/2 in. "3-Way Roof Edge Flashing" from HD, $9.98 for 10 ft length (enter that in a search on their site).
I attached it to 2x3 studs and attached the studs to the fascia so that the inside of the channel catches the water from the roof panels. So easy and it actually ended up looking better than before. It worked well because my roof pitch is steeper than what you have here, so the flashing is tilted enough that the inside corner can hold plenty of water. I just let the water drip off the sides rather than catch it with a hose. It's working great, even despite the 2 ft of snow we've received recently.
You know you can go to any HD or lowes and buy actual gutters, right?
It's best to get a continuous piece. Joined pieces have drainage problems and leak abd just get worse over time. Still, with everything so expensive, we can't always go premium.
You can use pressure treated wood for gutters. Thei will never rut. If the winter is cold and the summer to hot, they will wrinkle an crack, but some polyester will take care of any leaks. The channels in the polycarb have to be closed to avoid green goo creeping upwards.

I think this looks great! Personally I think conventional gutters are ugly. Thank you so much for posting this. This is exactly (almost) what I want to do and now I know the pitfalls in folding. I'm running a straight gutter 90 degrees from the house over my uncovered patio to divert water into a pond/wet area. The current gutter system delivers water onto the patio. Looks like your gutter was quite strong and could be self supporting if supported on each end. Not sure how I will attach this to the existing system, wind could be a factor so I need to think that through.

With a downspout that small, you must only get light rains. And no leaves, etc to clog

I built a wooden gutter. Glued and sealed with polyurethane. Painted to match where it was installed. Have to look hard to even see it.

What did you use for the downspout? Is that wood too? I like the idea of a wood gutter. Even if it’s not 100% water tight. Could be a neat architectural detail on a house
A classic. Add a rope or chain hung by a nail bridging across a hole for a downspout and you have a solid combo.
Last tip if you were here that up with a torch first it would’ve been simple butter bend
You can also just buy z flashing and cut and bend the ends, maybe add a rain chain?

You might could have used large flashing, and now perhaps a screen four leaves and a bigger hole & hose? But after all that hard work, it works and looks great.
I’m planning a pergola and was thinking of putting a cover on it. What clear material did you use? The flashing looks a little flimsy. Is it holding up with water in it? Also, is the hose big enough to move that much water out of the guttering? I’ve watched the water pouring on my storage shed and down the gutter. It’s a lot if it’s raining pretty good. How about a rain barrel to collect the downspout water?

The flashing by itself would be flimsy, but the supports hold it in place extremely well. It's been frozen solid multiple times during winter and didn't even flex. Everything is aluminum. The garden hose can handle a heavy rain, but I have a screen over it that I have to clean out often or it will overflow. Rain barrel coming soon.

Just curious about the chemical reaction that occurs between pressure treated wood and aluminum? I am told the two don't mix due to the chemicals in the pressure treated wood.

Another great job Blake. I am currently working on rain barrels for my shed roof. I have old trough's that i shortened and also did not want giant downspouts! So i am thinking I might also be able to us your hose idea? On the days we get monster rains I will just have to let the troughs fill over if the hose doesn't take the rain fast enough. But again I am curious to know how well the roof and trough in the snow. Our neighbor has a store bought gazebo and so far (2 winters) he has had the edge bend out when the snow turns to ice and pushes it out as it creates ice damns.
I’ve had a lot of snow on this roof and in the gutter. Big ice dams and it spills over the edge but no bending fortunately. Not much you can do in those instances. The garden hose has frozen once or twice. I could wrap it with heat tape but it’s not worth the hassle. It just drips off the edge like it did before I put the gutter in place. Sounds like you have an interesting project. I hope it turns out well.
Look great, awesome job. Nothing like the sense of accomplishment from a diy project and kudos for going the fabrication route. Pay no attention to the nay sayers they probably never have done blue collar work.

Not sure where you live but roofing supply stores sell HAND SEAMERS. harbor freight sells them for $6 or $8.
I love the determination.
However I hope it doesn’t snow where you live because that (?sexy) gutter is a goner.
Also I have a significant supply of hand roll formers. They allow me to make bends in aluminum at any length. So the 10’ brake problem is solved.
I actually have the very first one i bought for bending the first and last roof panels on standing seam projects.
How much did every single tool that you use cost?
Throw some lights under that gutter for some nice ambiance.
Thanks for the detail info. In the end I think a normal gutter might have looked nicer though. One thing that looks really bad is the garden hose at a sort of 45 degree angle out of the gutter. But since it’s in, maybe Try maybe UV resistant PVC pipe with a sharper turn.
even a light scratch in thin aluminum will eventually cause a split

That little hose doesn't seem like it will do much in a heavy rain.
Several folks have pointed out the hose. Obviously it's a big step down from a conventional downspout. The only issue I've had is the screen I put over it clogs with algae. I have to clean it every few weeks. Otherwise it seems to handle the volume, but where I live we don't get as many heavy downpours. It definitely wouldn't work in the south.

Blake - You might consider removing it before winter, because it’s likely to get damaged by any heavy snow or ice.
Believe it or not it has held a foot of snow. It’s also been frozen solid with no issues. But you make a good point. It would be relatively simple to remove.

Good job.. looks good. But dk if it was worth it especially with the chance of injury. Also make sure it has a slope towards the drain that way you don't get water just sitting there and.not draining properly. But looks good keep it up
It definitely took longer than I had hoped, but once I was committed, I had to finish it. I did drain it about 1.5 inches across 16 feet. That has been working well so far. Thanks for the comments!!

You can buy rain chains that are decorative and go directly into a barrel that can be encased in the same wood screen you have. You also could have cut the rods shorter and put screw caps on against the metal that would have given a cleaner look. You also would have had a curved trough that way without the effort of putting a crease in it. The hose drain looks cheap and the rods protruding give it an unfinished look. If you are happy with it, that’s all that matters.
Good thing you don’t live there, eh? 🙄 You and your ocd, smh! Who the heck is going to sit there and stare at a hose?? After messy rainy days, this simple, cheap diy has curbed the rain without costing so much out of pocket, or even hiring a contractor. I understand you’re trying to give advice and additional idea suggestions, but you can do that without being snarky and snooty. I’m sure we all can find something wrong with your diys. Feel free to post them in videos, “Tas”. I’m sure there will be another “Tas” out there that would think YOUR work is less than subpar and cheap. I, for one, love this idea!
Looks bubbly and kinky.. thicker gauge will eliminate the kinks , also that 3/4 drain will get plug up quick the sag your gutter.
As soon as I saw what you were using for metal stock I figured it was going to be wrinkled and wavey. It was. Preformed gutter would have looked so much better.
I was super curious what this would look like after watching you work on it for like 20 minutes. Then the video cuts to a shot of it in the day time after the night shot of you putting it up and... It looks awful, I mean truly ghetto like as if I went to someone's house that was built with parts from a scrap yard.
You can see the waves from where it was bent with that little piece of wood and its uneven.
If you really wanted a metallic finished gutter you probably should've gone with a regular gutter and some metallic spray paint or something.
A 10-second google search showed me you can actually buy galvanized steel gutters that look the same and are made by people who know what they are doing.
You also need to put some kind of mesh or something over the hose inlet or its going to clog with leaves and dirt fast. Regular gutters don't have large downspouts because they need to handle a 3-inch opening worth of water flow, its so they don't clog as easily.
💯 percent clever. Again, enjoy your sense of humour...and yes, as a DIY'er sometimes our creative juices get squished as we try out making our creations. Good play to have extra aluminum on hand to try again though!👍🇨🇦🍁.....and the garden hose then....well....goes into collecting water for your "garden" or lawn?? The skies is the limit! Go for it!

Assume you don't get a snow load there...And the first time you get a massive rainstorm that little hose downspout will not be able to keep up and the gutter will overflow or the aluminum rod 'brackets' will break from the weight of all that backed up water. If that's the look you wan't I'd order galvanized half round gutter and use an appropriately sized downspout.
Why not buy the 16ft pieces at HD? You need thicker gauge. This is so painful to watch

You can get modern guttering and clips and down pipe in the uk for about £25 so this doesn’t really look like its worth a bother

That was a neat creation, but I would have spray painted it to be copper colored, and instead of using a hose, I would use a rain chain into the barrel.
I don’t have any experience with a rain chain but I will try that next time.

If you coat the gutter with some of your hair product, it should stay up longer. Seriously though...if you discover that 3/4" hose and 1/4" aluminum rods can't take a deluge, I suggest upgrading to all-thread. You can ditch the cotter pins. While you are up there, you can also rivet some 1/2"x1/2"x1/16" aluminum angle down the top edge(s) of the gutter for a straighter, stronger vintage airplane effect. This is why non-sexy K-gutters have a rolled leading edge.

I put a screen over the hose inlet. I to have to clean it regularly or it will clog.
Hope you don’t have any trees three-quarter inches for a downspout shoot just the asphalt crumbs coming off my roof clog up my 4 inch downspout in one season

Why not just use 4 or 6 inch PVC pipes? Cut it in half & get with 45s / 90s into the & that should be a gutter system no?

All it takes is one leaf or twig to clog the hose and defeat this bad design. A+ for effort C- for design and execution.

Correct. I sloped a bit steeper because the hose inlet for the downspout is about 1/2 inch above the bottom of the channel. I realize it's not exactly by the book.
Why didn't you just by corner flashing? Then all you had to do was drill the holes and end caps.

This thing has held a foot of snow and didn't budge. It held solid ice up to the brim with no problem.
I appreciate your creativity, but I think you might have some future problems.
While the gutter might have worked in a light rain, I think you might find it failing in a heavier rain, or rather the garden hose downspout. The amount of water coming off your roof will likely exceed the capacity of the hose. Even more so, 3-4” downspouts can clog with debris. It seems even more likely with a 3/4” hose. You also have a potential failure lurking where you connect dissimilar metals.
